Prompt 7 – Achievement Unlocked: What goal did you set for yourself and achieve this year? Did you achieve something you didn’t think you could? Did you win an award? Did you set a record? Did you finally get your VCR from 1985 to stop blinking 12:00? C’mon, share it! Today is your chance to brag and get a resounding round of interweb applause.

I don’t know that I ever intended to go into business for myself, but here I am at the end of 2011 with two businesses I look after and cultivate on a daily basis. Who would have thought it? Not me, and I certainly wouldn’t have thought a year ago at this time this is what was lying ahead, waiting for me to grab it.

Both of my businesses are still babies. One–You and Who–was started by my boyfriend, Dan, last year. I came on board halfway through this year to manage communications for the company, as it is expanding nationally. The second–19 IDEAS–is a communications company that was launched also midway through 2011, where I do communications and public relations work for a variety of businesses.

As both are still young and ever-changing, it’s hard to call each business an achievement, as I feel, at times, that “achievement” signifies what you call something upon it’s completion or when a goal is reached. I have achieved a lot through the businesses, but the businesses themselves are still evolutionary. But, then I think to myself, that’s every business, regardless of how long it’s been in existence.

So, maybe my biggest achievement with these businesses isn’t about having x number of sales or y dollars in revenue. Rather, perhaps my biggest achievement this year was having the chutzpah to leave the safety of a full-time job and pursue ventures of my own. And if “achievement” is in any way defined by the sense of pride one feels by doing something, than I can say affirmatively this is my crowning achievement, certainly for 2011. And if this year was any indication of “you never know what’s around the corner,” then let me brace myself for 2012.
